Earlier this year while hiking up Middle Carter up in the White Mountains of New Hampshire I took some great pictures of an adult male Spruce Grouse very near the summit. He was showing his brooding plumage the red around the eyes and thus was hard to identify.

Many thanks to Sarah and her friend Jay from the New Hampshire Audobon society for their identification of this guy as an adult male spruce grouse in breeding plumage. I’ll share a handful more photos of him in the coming week or so.

Spruce Grouse are only found in the White Mountains and on northward. They are known for being tame and very approachable but you have to hike up to the higher elevations to see them!
